Paphos is on the UP

Signs that Paphos depression is over

Paphos mayor and prominent local businessmen have said they are confident the worst of the financial crisis is over for the town, citing increased sales of properties, major infrastructural works and a big push to increase the numbers of direct flights with major airlines.

The mayor of Paphos, Savvas Vergas said that he is pushing international airlines to add Paphos airport to their schedules and that this, along with a raft of new projects ranging from the Paphos ring road and new town hall to the opening of a Lidl supermarket and a Cineplex, would all help to "get the economy moving again".

"I firmly believe that from now Paphos will start to recover slowly; the main crisis for us was in 2010," Vergas said.

Paphos has been the worst hit by the financial crisis and was recently dealt another huge blow when troubled Cyprus Airways said it was slashing flights in and out of the new multi million euro airport. "We are speaking with other airline companies at the moment and they are interested," said Vergas. "We will be able to not only replace the number of flights that we lost from CY but actually increase them."

The mayor said major state and private sector projects earmarked for Paphos for this year and 2012 would go a long way to boosting the local economy. "We are in the process of building a ring road around the city of Paphos," he said. "We are also working on a new city hall, upgrading and re opening the public swimming pool, and there are many other small works to be done." He cited projects such as new pavements, roads, and the beautification of a number of green areas.

Private projects for Paphos which will start in a few months will also help, he said. These include the new shopping mall in Kato Paphos, Neapolis, the Lidl supermarket and a Cineplex. In the longer term, he said, that if Paphos gets chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2017 the town will build a new large, modern theatre and a new museum. Other projects for the district include the Paphos to Polis road, the new marina at Potima, a new road which will run from the tourist area in Kato Paphos to the airport and renovation of Paphos old town.
